Blog-Search Shootout - Technorati vs. Google

In response to Robert Scoble’s call to test Technorati Search vs Google Blog Search, I decided to search for Sanjaya and Shyamali Malakar (something I have been doing frequently anyway) -
- Sanjaya Malakar (without quotes) has 9988 results on Technorati (including 588 results from blogs with a lot of authority) versus 16437 results at Google Blog Search
- Shyamali Malakar (without quotes) has 517 results on Technorati (including 51 results from blogs with a lot of authority) versus 420 results at Google Blog Search
While the results from both Google Blog Search and Technorati don’t look like spam, I personally prefer to use Technorati because it allows me to filter results based on the authority of the blogs.
The verdict then? Based on number of search results - inconclusive. Based on usability - definitely Technorati.
By the way, it’s that time of the week again when I write a Sanjaya Malakar post. This week, I have two or three up my sleeve, and I’m not even counting this one.

I believe the other way round. IMO Technorati sucks big time in identifying relevant information, as it is sorted timewise (I could nt find a easy way to switch to relvance sorting as google does) and the authortiy tagging was not pretty impressive (any group of 10 people could have a lot of links among them and make them “authoritative”). Google’s blog search was bad initially, but for the last one year I found it much more superior and its been a while since I used or cared about Technorati for both searching other’s blogs and indexing my own blogs.

@Balaji: As per my understanding, Google’s PageRank and Technorati’s Authority are both based on similar factors, including the number of incoming links. Incoming links are the very currency on the web and I’ll be careful before dismissing any search engine that uses them to sort results. That said, while Technorati has worked for me quite well, maybe I should also spend some time on Google Blog Search before I dismiss is offhand.
