At the Global Voices Citizen Media Summit 2010, I interviewed my friend Elia Varela Serra (@eliaws) on African blogging platform Maneno (@maneno).
Maneno is a lightweight, multilingual blogging platform, built for Sub-Saharan Africa.
Elia and Miquel (@hudin) built Maneno in 2008 in response to their own frustrations in blogging in low bandwidth Africa. Now, Elia and Miquel have moved back to Ivory Coast to be close to their users and build a strong community around Maneno.
I’m delighted to see innovative designed-for-Africa technology platforms like Ushahidi and Maneno get attention beyond Africa.
At GV2010, I was delighted to see an entire ecosystem of crisis reporting and election monitoring projects emerge around the Ushahidi SMS-map mashup, a platform I have used myself for Vote Report India.
At GV2010, I also saw much interest in Maneno’s multi-lingual blogging community, especially in the context of GV’s own Lingua and Translation Exchange projects.
Ushahidi and Maneno are reminders that instead of asking “how can we help Africa?”, we need to ask “how can Africa help us?” Thoughts?
