Predictions on Web Measurement and Analytics in 2009

Kate Neiderhoffer has compiled the thoughts of 14 thought leaders on the trends in web measurement and analytics in 2009 in a neat e-book (PDF).
Here are the thought leaders — Neal Burns, Walter Carl, Maury Giles, Sam Gosling, Seth Grimes, Matthew Hurst, Paul Janowitz, Shawn Kung, Roddy Lindsay, Jamie Pennebaker, Martha Russell, Miles Sims, Marc Smith, and Daniel Tunkelang — and here are the top four predictions –
- We will substantially advance our understanding of individuals and the meaningful connections they have.
- We will identify methods to tap what people are *really* thinking, feeling, and paying attention to, meanwhile gaining insight on what a measurement is truly capturing.
- We will determine how to measure the value of social interactions and attach financial value, whether we’re monetizing attention or a new medium.
- We will build better tools to manage– analyze and visualize– massive volumes of data, primarily tapping the evolving social graph
I think all the four predictions are directionally correct. We need to learn how to measure these things, and, eventually, we will figure out how. I don’t think, however, that it will happen in 2009.

Thanks for re-posting these, Gaurav. I think we’ll make substantial progress on all these fronts this year, even if no gold standard is sought. We need to measure things meaningfully – with sound methodology, despite alternative means (including external validity). I think 2009 will see a stronger bridge between academia and practice and help move things forward.

@Kate: I’ll be delighted if we do make significant progress on these gaps in 2009.
