My Talk on Digital Activism at Social Media Club Delhi

Welcome back to Gauravonomics Blog! Subscribe to my feed now and you'll never miss a single post!

In my previous post on three lessons entrepreneurs can learn from activists, I wrote about the importance of building a partner and volunteer ecosystem and mentioned how we use this principle in our own work at 2020 Social.

Over the last three months, Dave has been working with several other social media practitioners and enthusiasts to start chapters of Social Media Club in a number of Indian cities, including Delhi (Facebook, Twitter), Mumbai (Twitter), Bengaluru (Twitter), Chennai (Twitter), Kolkata (Twitter), Hyberabad (Twitter), and Pune (Twitter). Several of these aren’t yet active, so if you want to take the lead in your local Social media Club, write to @evansdave on Twitter or volunteer on the Social Media Club wiki.

The Delhi Chapter of Social media Club held its first meetup at Hauz Khas Village on November 21, 2009 (the first Social Media Club meetup in India?) and some 40 odd people turned up.

I gave a talk on digital activism in India and China to emphasize the idea that social media goes beyond business and marketing.

In the discussion that followed, I suggested that we keep the focus of Social Media Club meetups on big ideas so that not only social media enthusiasts and practitioners but also marketers and non-profits are interested in getting involved. I would love to attend talks that teach me something new about social media in India, for instance —

    - How are Janaagraha, Breakthrough and Cry uses social media in India.
    - How are Zoho, Deskaway, Uhuroo, Cynapse, YouSuggestand Remindo are building SaaS-based collaboration products out of India?
    - How are startups like Quippy, Fachak and Lifeblob building consumer focused social networking platforms from India?

I hope Dave and the other good folks who are setting up Social Media Clubs in India will keep their eye on the big ideas and make the Indian chapters some of the most vibrant communities in the Social Media Club ecosystem.

Full House at Dave Evans’ Social Media Marketing Workshops in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai

I had the great pleasure of spending a week with Dave Evans, the best-selling author of “Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day”, as we traveled across the country to conduct three full-day social media marketing workshops in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.

The workshops were organized by my partner Sunil Agarwal’s public relations firm 20:20 Media. We had a full house at all the three workshops and it was the perfect setting to launch our new social media company 20:20 WebTech.

Sunil started off the workshops with an overview of what to expect and I briefly talked about my 4Cs social media framework. Then, Dave took over and gave a great conceptual and practical perspective on how to use social media technologies, in strategic and tactical ways, to achieve business objectives.

The workshops were attended by communications, public relations, advertising and marketing professionals, including some Chief Marketing Officers.

Several attendees live-tweeted the workshop and said good things about us –

    - In Delhi: @aakriti, @_anshul, @naukri, @smrite, @srivastavanitin, @palinn, @arushsogani, @shrutigupta7, @vidhithakur

    - In Bangalore: @jessie_paul, @hardrockk, @zeitgeisthuntin, @dhempe @meher_taj, @rahkulk, @ashw1n, @santoshmaharshi, @vidder911

    - In Mumbai: @primaveron, @swatidwivedi, @mysti, @gitaagarwal, @krushant

Palin Ningthoujam did a great Q&A with Dave on eight tricky social media marketing questions asked by clients. The Empowered SEO team also wrote a great post on the workshop. Mid Day, Deccan Herald and Exchange4Media also wrote about the workshop and NDTV Profit is doing a program on it.

We are thankful to everyone for the great response to the workshop and hope that the workshops will seed some interesting conversations on social media marketing in India.

I have seen Dave’s training material and he does a really good job of putting together both the conceptual and practical aspects of social media marketing, from developing a strategy based on business objectives, to implementing the campaign, and measuring results.

Dave has also been doing a series of webinars on social media marketing for 20:20 Media, so you can get a preview of what to expect from the full-day workshops.

The workshops cost a very reasonable Rs. 7500 (about $150), and, if you register by June 15th, you’ll also get a free copy of Dave’s book.

So, do read through the workshop website and brochure, see who else is attending, register for the workshop, and spread the word around.

For more information contact: Abha Arora (abha@2020india.com, 080 -22123111) or Mohit Verma (mohit@2020india.com, 09818821641/ 0120-4642034).

I’ll be at all three events, so, if you do attend the workshop, let’s meet up and talk.

Update: Here’s the press release, in case you know some journalists who would like to cover the event.

But cultures Patek Philippe shop around the world also developed methods of making cloth that were artistic, creative, and beautiful.

Social Media Outsourcing Redux: I’m Starting a Brand Monitoring Company

I have written before that one way to ensure that your predictions come true is to do yourself what you predicted others would do.

After saying for more than a year that social media outsourcing will be the next big business opportunity for India, and lead the third wave of Indian outsourcing, I’m setting up a business to exploit this opportunity.

I’m setting up a social media company called 20:20 Web Tech with Sunil Agarwal, the founder of 20:20 Media. We’ll be based in Delhi, but focus on providing social media analysis and brand monitoring services for international clients.

There are more than 50 social media analysis tools, but no tool is more than 50-60% accurate, due to the difficulties in decoding spam, slang, sarcasm and sentiment. We will add value by adding a layer of human intelligence on top of the technology, and increasing the accuracy of the results to as much as 90-95%. As we will be based in India, where manpower costs are really low, we’ll be able to do it at a really competitive cost.

We’ll have a fairly robust tool of our own, but we will also work with other tools that our clients might be using. In fact, our business model will be based on partnering with, not competing with, the present social media analysis companies.

I think that the closest example of what we are trying to build is KDPaine & Partners, except that it is based in the US. Being based in the US has a visibility advantage while being based in India has a cost advantage, so we are hoping that, instead of competing, we’ll be able to partner with Katie and other players in the space.

By the way, Sunil and I first met at the South by Southwest Festival in March. I asked a question at a panel and ended up giving the answer myself. My mini-speech led to an interview with BBC, and a discussion with Sunil, and now to this company. So, the moral of the story is: go to conferences and ask questions that only you can answer.

I’m in Washington DC for another month, and I’ll be happy to start conversations that can evolve into business relationships three months down the line. I can be reached at +12022791925 or gaurav@2020webtech.com.

My affirmation is finally coming true, albeit a year late. 2008 was the best year of my life. 2009 promises to be even better. Do wish me luck.

Update: I just re-read my post and realized how cocky I sound. Let me assure you that I feel like a little boy who has just found out that Santa Claus is for real. I still can’t believe my luck in having Sunil as a partner. He is almost like a father-figure and it’s such a delight to be able to work with someone I can look up to, learn from. So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that everything works out. I’m very excited and very scared and I do need your wishes and blessings. So, really, do send out a little prayer for me.

Hey Gaurav – this is great news! All the best. I really look forward to a refreshing edge to your approach – it’s one of those burning questions that are still not effectively addressed – that damn ROI word :)

      Question – only US Clients???

      • Gaurav Mishra 9:28 am on May 13, 2009 Permalink | Reply

@Dina: Thank you. We’ll initially focus on US clients because we won’t have to create a market, unlike in India. However, things are fairly fluid, and will remain so, and if there is enough demand for our services in India, we will be happy to offer them to Indian clients.

List of Social Media Agencies in India

Update: Here’s an updated list of social media agencies in India.

I have been watching the social media marketing scene in India for a while now, and, suddenly, things seem to be heating up in this space. On the demand side, companies/ brands are showing willingness to engage with social media and, on the supply side, many players are offering, or planning to offer, a variety of social media services.

The Indian players offering social media marketing services can broadly be divided into three categories –

    - Digital advertising agencies offering social media marketing services with a focus on virals, social network apps, social media campaigns etc.

    - Public relations agencies/ practitioners offering social media services with a focus on online reputation monitoring and social media outreach etc.

    - Prominent bloggers offering, basically, corporate blogging consulting services and workshops.

Let’s look at the players under each category in some detail.

    Coming Soon

By the end of 2008, I see the following players entering the market –

    - Nielsen Buzzmetrics is said to be in talks with some Indian multinationals for their online reputation monitoring service.

    - International PR agencies Fleishman Hillard and Edelman are said to have approached Indian multinationals for their online reputation monitoring service via their offices in Mumbai.

    - Zeta Interactive, which owns social media agency Relevant Noise, may start offering these services through their Zustek office in Hyderabad.

    - Advertising agency CreativeLand Asia is also planning to start offering social media outreach services.

Apart from the five possible entrants that I have identified, I see at least half a dozen other serious players entering the social media marketing scene in India by end of 2008.

    - Update on February 26, 2008:- According to Palin at India PR Blog, several PR agencies — including Weber Shandwick (with Screengrab), 2020 Media, Redifussion PR, Adfactors PR, and Genesis Burson Marsteller — are planning to start their own social media divisions.

It seems that, by the end of 2008, we’ll have 25-30 serious social media players in the Indian market. That’s amazing, isn’t it?

I intend to update this list of social media agencies in India on a regular basis. So, if you know any other agencies in India who are focused on online reputation management, social media outreach or viral marketing, do send me an e-mail or leave a comment below.

Now that we have a firm handle on the list of social media agencies in India, the other thread to pick up, of course, will be Rajesh’s tweet on what is the potential size of the social media business in India.

      Nice list Gaurav. Thanks.

It might be interesting to add differentiators to make it even more meaningful.

Social media can be many things – setting up a blog for someone can be social media , so can be uploading a video on You Tube ;)

For eg. we deliver strategic advice that’s aligned with business/ marketing needs/ goals of the clients. Deliver insight programmes, drive evangelist programmes etc.

Social media is just one of the routes for outreach, we combine our learnings in mainstream and social media to drive value for our clients.

      Cheers.

      Rajesh

      Hi Gaurav,

Good work. This list was really required. But there are few more agencies working in this space.
iStrat Software from Delhi is one such name. I work with them and we have already done some brilliant work in terms of blogging and online reputation management for some well known companies. Do include us when you update your list the next time.

      Hi Gaurav,
I am Ajinkya, a 2nd year student of PGDCM from MICA, Ahmedabad. I am interested in Social media, and towards the same I have pursued relevant project and written paper. The list you put forth here is of tremendous help to me now.
Being a veteran in this field, could you please guide me towards carving a fruitful career in this field? Specifically speaking, which companies would be ideal for a passionate management graduate to start his career in? which companies are growing and hope to continue their growth in these troubled times?
      Awaiting your response.
      Thanking you,
      Ajinkya

      Hi Gaurav,

That’s an impressive list. It would have nice, if you could have separated the technology companies that are providing analysis solutions on social media from the other companies.

One such company is ‘Germinait Solutions’ (www.germinait.com) based in Mumbai, where we are building a next-gen technology platform for social media analysis. We have done some brilliant work in Natural language processing area. Please include Germinait Solutions in your list.

I am eager to know about other companies that are working in similar space.

      Regards,
      Neelesh

Apart from the list of the companies, that have already been mentioned above, another agnecy that is already doing great amount of mindblowing work in this space is OgilvyPR. Their digital works are too well established and have very high expert team catering to all the markets of APAC.I have personally some of their work and of others too in various campaigns. So I feel that digital in India is not lagging far behind

I read your list and you seem to have comprehensive knowledge about social media in India.

What do you think are the chances of an international social media company surviving in India. I am a student in Miami Ad School and I am working on a project on social media. Any information that you can give me about social media in the India market, the scope, the kind of clients who would be open to it, anything at all, would be of great help.

looking forward to hearing from you.

      Thanks.

        @siddharth Acharya

There are many books on Social Media Marketing, the recent one we had in India was Social Media Marketing by Dave Evans. Its a good book. But its quite deep and professional. I suggest you can go to http://www.docstoc.com and scribd.com. and search for books on Social Media. You will find many.

      Possible to update now?
      Good blog, Gaurav. Cheers!

One thing you don't mention is the success rate of these companies, especially when marketing internationally. I find it very difficult to locate staff with enough international experience to say, market to the US using social media. The English is all wrong, their cultural awareness is naive, but their arrogance something to behold! As an American working here, when I've found good staff willing to learn, they've done really well, especially in Kolkata. Here in Delhi, they simply just don't get it. I'm trying to understand what the difference may be.

Domestically, I've worked with a number of these companies and they've done some really successful campaigns for the Indian market, things that would never have worked overseas. I'd like to be able to offer outsourcing services to American clients, but I don't think the talent is here to do it effectively yet. I think the industry in India is similar to call centers a while back, when they finally realized that they needed to train their staff in cultural awareness and interaction. Only then will India be able to expand their social media marketing business beyond its own borders.

Jeanne: I agree. Most young Indians do have limited international exposure and Indian English is very different from American English. I think the trick is to recruit well-educated (and costly) employees and charge a premium.
