Desi Blog of the Day Redux

Welcome back to Gauravonomics Blog! Subscribe to my feed now and you'll never miss a single post!

You might have noticed that I haven’t done a Desi Blog of the Day post in the last few days. That’s because I have been asking myself a few questions about the series of late.

But, first, a little background. I started my Desi Blog of the Day series because -

I found myself thinking of the joy I felt when I first discovered blogs, and realized that I still feel it when I read some blogs.

I also incorporated a BlogTipping element in the series -

by offering three compliments and one helpful tips to the featured bloggers

    - because even very popular bloggers often focus exclusively on the writing part and don’t really leverage the true potential of blogging in terms of optimizing design/ usability and/ or building a community.

However, I wasn’t really satisfied with how the series was shaping up. Here are some questions I have been asking myself –

Is there any value in featuring well-known blogs all my readers are probably reading anyway?

Should I focus exclusively on new or relatively unknown blogs – ‘Must Read Desi Blogs You Probably Don’t Read’?

How can I increase the involvement of the featured bloggers in the series?

How can I make the BlogTipping element more useful for the featured bloggers?

Here are some of my preliminary answers on how I want to take the ‘Desi Blog of the Day’ series forward –

    - I’m planning to break up the ‘Hundred Must Read Desi Blogs’ list into two parts – ‘Fifty Must Read Desi Blogs You Probably Read Anyway’ and ‘Fifty Must Read Desi Blogs You Probably Don’t Read’.

The first list will feature bloggers who are already prominent in desi blogging circles and are frequently featured in DesiPundit or Indibloggies, for instance. This is because no list of desi bloggers will be complete without these bloggers.

The second list will feature two types of bloggers: bloggers who are relatively new or unknown and bloggers who are very well-known in their own niches, like Technology, but are not read by the DesiPundit/ Indibloggies crowd.

    - I’m also planning to change the format of the post itself. The posts will now include a small bio/ interview with the blogger to give you a sense of who they are and why they blog, followed by three reasons why they are included in the series and my blogging tip to them.

    - Finally, I’m planning to extend the BlogTipping element by offering to help the featured bloggers implement my tip.

The Desi Blog of the Day series will be back soon, but do let me know what you like/ don’t like about the series, so that I can incorporate your feedback/ suggestions into the series.

The interview/bio part should be interesting…

Spectacular and Useful Blog!!! I have also added you to my Technorati fav’s! Thanks for the visit!!!!!!

In my opinion it won’t be good enough as we don’t have that many desi blogs for you to do Desi Blog series. Maybe a Desi Blog of the fortnight or month will be a good option.

And as Vi said, interviewing the blogger would be cool.

i second Ashwin. focus on quality and also end of the day, you won’t be exhausted.

Interviews would be great, and yes, bringing out lesser known bloggers would be much better than pointing us out to prominent bloggers we already read or know about.

      @Everybody: Thanks for the suggestions.

@Ashwin/ Prasanth/ TGFI (on e-mail): You’ll be surprised at how many really good desi blogs are out there waiting to be discovered. I’m trying out a smart model of doing it daily in the version 2 of the series. Let’s see if it works. :-)

Hi Gaurav, I think its really excellent that you are working on this. I agree that a lot of blogs dont focus enough on the community building aspect. My blog is starting up with the premise that, although I’m doing a lot of writing for it, the engine that drives the blog is guest writers and swapping of funny and odd desi artifacts. Anyway I’d love your suggestions if you have any…the blog is still in its infancy but already there’s a lot of fun to be had. See you there.

Every Day is a BlogTipping Day

    blogtipping.gif

May 1 is the first anniversary of BlogTipping Day.

But, what’s BlogTipping? BlogTipping is an idea started by Easton Ellsworth of Business BlogWire. The first calendar day of each month is a new Blogtipping Day. To participate, you publish a blog post in which you link to three unsuspecting blogs and offer three compliments and one helpful tip to each blogger. What I love about the idea is the element of selflessness that is built into it.

Blogtipping is a great way to show your appreciation of your favorite blogs, so grab your blogtipping icon and participate in the May 1 Blogtipping Day anniversary.

As for me, while I’ll participate in all Blogtipping Days from here on, I’ll also spread blogtipping love in my Desi Blog of the Day posts by offering three compliments and one helpful tips to the featured bloggers.

Also see – BlogTipping on Technorati.

Cool! I had decided to do a periodic round-up of blogs that I like, and this one sounds fun too. BTW, while I had heard of you/your blog in the blogworld, somehow I only read it some detail only now. Great blog! Expect to back here periodically now.

My ‘Hundred Must Read Desi Blogs’ List

It has been a week since I put up my thirty by thirty list, and already I have had some early wins.

I’m now writing for both DesiPundit and Global Voices, something I wouldn’t even have dreamed of a few months back. This gives me an unique opportunity to showcase upcoming desi blogs to both desi (via DesiPundit) and global (via Global Voices) readers and I’m hoping that, by promoting good desi blogs, I’ll play a small part in the growth of desi blogging itself.

I’m also trying to help other (desi) bloggers through my blogging tips for beginners – Novice Blogger – series. As you know, I’m not an expert on blogs or blogging. I still struggle with the simplest of code, I still make basic blogging mistakes, and my blog is not even moderately popular in terms of most metrics like number of feed subscribers, number of back-links, or number of comments. However, every single day, I’m trying out new things, both at the front-end and at the back-end, making mistakes and learning from my mistakes. I share my mistakes, and my learnings, in the hope that some of it will be useful to other bloggers, especially beginners. So, go ahead, read my Novice Blogger series, subscribe to my Novice Blogger feed, or bookmark my Novice Blogger resource page, and if you have more questions, feel free to contact me by e-mail or via my contact form. I cannot promise that I’ll always be prompt, or useful, but I’ll try.

As some of you know, I have about two hundred desi blogs on my feedreader. Given that I have a sixty hour work week, I cannot always keep up with my feed backlog, but I try. I recently wrote a post on my five favorite desi bloggers because I found myself thinking of the joy I felt when I first discovered blogs, and realized that I still feel it when I read some blogs. In the same spirit, I have started a page on “Hundred Must Read Desi Blogs”. Starting with the five blogs I have already written about, I’ll add one blog to the list every day. Everyday, for the next three months, I’ll write a short post on the blog I’m adding to my list and call it “Desi Blog of the Day”. I’ll add new blogs to the list until I reach hundred and, after that, when I add a new blog to it, I’ll delete another one from it. Once more, I would like to re-iterate that my “Hundred Must Read Desi Blogs” list is not an expert’s list but an enthusiast’s.

If you think that I should include your blog in the list, please drop in a comment. As I’m only adding one blog a day, and I can already think of at least twenty blogs I want to add to the list, I might not add your blog immediately. However, if I like your blog, I’ll subscribe to it, and you would have found yourself a new reader.

Finally, even though I read four hundred feeds, I’m always looking out for interesting posts to link to. So, if you have written or read an interesting post or article, do send me a tip by e-mail or via my contact form. If I like the post, I’ll link to it on DesiPundit or Global Voices (if it’s from a desi blog), or on Linkastic (if it fits Amit’s very strict guidelines), or on my blog itself.

An afterthought – while my five favorite desi bloggers are not interested in doing the meme, why don’t you write a post on who your five favorite desi bloggers are and why you love reading their blogs. Consider yourself tagge

      Thanks for yr tips,dude.

Talking about Business and Finance appears drab and unglamorous on the Blogosphere. But I enjoy what I am doing and am not trying to be like somebody else. Fact is, I have learnt many new things and have met (virtually) many fabulous people. One is you.

I’ve done a similar post identifying my favorite blogs here: Blogging with Focus and Attitude

Another post that I would like you to see is : SWOT Analysis

And this: GOD: A Case Study for Branding
