How International Values Shape Communications Technologies Podcast – Episode 1

Welcome back to Gauravonomics Blog! Subscribe to my feed now and you'll never miss a single post!

(Cross-posted at my fellowship blog — How International Values Shape Communications Technologies)

In the introductory episode of our weekly fellowship podcast, Ben, Pavneet and I explain why our research on social media in BRIC countries is uniquely interdisciplinary, share the personal biases with which we are approaching our research, summarize what we have learned so far, and share our plans for the rest of the year.

The starting point of our research is to understand how differences in culture, access and language in BRIC countries impact the three core values of social media usage — collaboration, community and user generated content — across tools and devices. Pavneet’s focus is on the community and he explores two really important use cases for social media — consumer advocacy and civic engagement. Ben’s focus is on the individual and he explores issues of identity and privacy in the context of social media usage. My role is to pull it all together into a meaningful framework.

So, our research really lies at the intersection of three worlds that (surprisingly) don’t really understand each other — the web 2.0 world, the technology policy world, and the ICT4D world. But, beyond that, it’s really rooted in the tradition of cultural studies and borrows heavily from research related to business, government and development.

Our personal research scopes also tie in neatly with our personal biases. Ben’s experiences as a warblogger partly explain his interest in identity and privacy. Pavneet’s focus on business and government explains his interest in how both of them are being transformed by social media. Finally, my own user-centric approach to the research is biased by my previous avatar as ‘the marketer who understood social media’.

The subsequent episodes of the podcasts will be based around interviews. We already have 2.5GB of audio material waiting to be edited and we have some really interesting interviews lined up for the coming weeks. So, do subscribe to the podcast in iTunes or elsewhere and do stay tuned.

What to Expect on My Blog(s) Over the Next Nine Months

Now that my blog is my work for the next nine months, I thought it will be useful to redefine the focus of my blog(s), both as a guide to my readers and to myself.

During my tenure as the Yahoo! Fellow at Georgetown University, my official fellowship blog — How Global Values Shape Communications Technologies — will be my main blog. In my daily posts on the blog, I’ll mostly focus on how social media will be used differently in BRIC countries as compared to US/ EU, but also riff frequently on the broader theme of how international values apply to the development and use of new communications technologies in BRIC countries. From mid-September, I will start hosting a weekly podcast with thinkers and practitioners from the social media and social entrepreneurship fields, and from mid-December, I will become involved in inviting and editing contributions for a crowd-sourced paper (or e-book) on how global values shape communications technologies. So, my fellowship blog will demand most of my time and energy and I would urge you to subscribe to it in a feed reader or by e-mail.

On Gauravonomics Blog, I’ll continue to write daily posts on marketing, technology and social media. My big thrust will be on my daily vidcast where I’ll do short riffs on ideas and issues that interest me. Apart from these daily riffs, I’ll do a Monday morning weekly digest of Indian marketing/ technology/ social media blogs, a Wednesday morning weekly digest of Washington DC marketing/ technology/ social media blogs, and a Friday morning “thought anchor” post that will be a 1000-1500 word summary of all that I know about a topic. If you haven’t subscribed to Gauravonomics Blog yet, I would urge you to subscribe to it now in a feed reader or by e-mail.

My Off-Consumption Blog will see some serious changes soon, with the focus shifting from my own year-long off-consumption experiment to other people who have stepped off the work-watch-spend treadmill, or asked themselves difficult questions about identity, or chosen to define themselves by means other than buying or owning things. With the shift to the immersive journalism or ethnography mode, I’ll be writing only one 1000-1500 word post per week on this blog. If you haven’t subscribed to the blog yet, now is a good time to subscribe, either in a feed reader or via e-mail.

Finally, I’ll be posting infrequent poems, stories and personal essays on Gauravonomics Diary. I would suggest that you subscribe to it (in a feed reader or by e-mail) only if you know me personally or think of me as a friend.

Apart from my four blogs, I’ll also be writing frequent guest posts on some popular marketing, technology and social media blogs, so my blog has really become my work. My situation reminds me of the popular saying — you should be careful of what you ask for, in case your wish comes true — not that I’m complaining (yet).

The State of Radio Podcast from Sonologue

I’m delighted that my friend Chhavi Sachdev — who runs audio content and consulting company Sonologue — has started a new podcast on the state of the radio industry in India

This week, I’m looking at a few new station launches in India, including India’s first real NGO-run community radio station, Q2 results from the RAB in the US and iWorldspace, as well as a UK study on podcasting and what the numbers mean for radio listenership.

After more than a decade in the US, Chhavi returned to India last year to seed the idea of meaningful talk radio in India. Before she started Sonologue, she was a partner in News Radio India where she produced content for Radio Netherlands and WBUR. Chhavi is very involved in the community radio scene in India and has some fascinating ideas about the state of radio in India.

I have been prodding Chhavi into doing a podcast for a few months now, and I’m delighted that she has taken the plunge at a moment when she is struggling with putting together the rest of the Sonologue website. Chhavi’s podcast is another lesson for me that we need fewer resources than we think we do to do something we really want to do.

Yours Truly Featured in Indian Daily Mid-Day’s Story on Cool Bachelor Pads

Quick Summary: Indian daily Mid-Day did a story today on cool bachelor pads and used mine as the lead.

Gaurav Mishra Mid Day Cool Bachelor Pads

Indian daily Mid-Day did a story today on cool bachelor pads and featured my own humble bachelor pad as the lead —

    Gaurav Mishra, 28, Marketer

After 6 years of slumming it out at hostels and PG setups (through his education and internship), Gaurav Mishra was finally ready to settle down. “Not in the oft-used sense of the term, of course,” the IIM-B alumnus jokes. So, the 28-year-old traded in his nomadic lifestyle for a 2-bedroom flat in Cuffe Parade, that he painstakingly furnished and colour coordinated black upholstery, orange bedroom, blue living room to ensure it feels like home.

Gaurav’s tips: Don’t blindly follow people’s advice. I was told cane furniture is difficult to maintain, but I’ve had mine for the last 4 years. And it’s good as new. Instead of letting stuff (clothes, books, dishes…) pile up, allot spaces for various things, and ensure they go there. Booze bottles and glasses stay in the bar cabinet, books and DVDs in my second bedroom, that I plan to turn into a podcasting studio, the technophile says.

In case you are wondering, I don’t (yet) have the tens of crores one needs to buy a house like this in Mumbai’s Cuffe Parade. I just live there, thanks to my very generous employers.

Finally, w.r.t. converting my second bedroom into a podcast studio, I have been toying with the idea of starting a video podcast for a while now and hope to put up the first episode in March itself. It will be great if you could share tips/ resources on how to do a video podcast series.

      Hi Gaurav,
I have always dreamed of starting a Trust for feeding the under priviledged for free. If your house was also up for grabs, i would have leased the same and used the funds for the same. I SUGGEST YOU PUT YOUR BELONGINGS UP FOR SALE/AUCTION AND USE THE AMOUNT FOR FREEBIES TO THE NEEDY.

      REGARDS
      DARIUS P. IRANI

First of all thanks for the link-love. Secondly, my response to Gaurav’s tweet is more of agreeing to disagree where I feel value is of course in the list and not ranking but a comprehensive ranking makes it more trustworthy and noteworthy for future readers to chuck out the unwanted junk out of the clutter. And I feel then only the sense of valuable community can be realized when the best will stand out of the rest.

Still appreciate for the LiveMint link. Will definitely think about it in the coming days. Would be requiring some assistance from our SMM fraternity.
