The 20:20 Social team is working on a report on social media analytics tools and I will be eagerly looking forward to the reviews.
Here are ten things I look for in a social media analytics tool – 1. Flexibility in keyword setup.2. Width and depth of crawler, in terms of types of content, languages and geographies.
3. Auto-filtering of spam and duplicate posts.
4. Auto-tagging and auto-clustering based on sentiment and location tags.
5. Ability to manually delete irrelevant posts.
6. Ability to manually change tags.
7. Ability to assign roles, respond, create profiles and track conversation over time.
8. Flexibility in customizing dashboard.
9. Ability to export tagged data as RSS feed or CSV file.
10. Ability to connect with other APIs like CRM tools, Google Analytics and Google AdWords. What do you look for in a social media analytics tool? Nathan Gilliat, by the way, has a great report on social media analytics tools.







That’s a solid checklist for anyone considering a social media analytics service/product. I would add user-friendly to your list based on the idea that unless a service is accessible and intuitive, the features can overshadowed.

This is awesome! I've been looking into good quality social media analytics tools. I've heard good things about Radian6. Our own product focuses more on the execution of a social media campaign than the monitoring on it, but it's always good to check out what's the best in the industry
Good list, Gaurav. We had also conceptualized a tool which was a step in that direction – http://www.webprmanager.com/ – the tool is still not actively marketed. I liked what you wrote in the post.
I would also add being able to add and edit manually collected data. From an India context, especially, most reporting tools aren't able to pick up feeds from some of the really popular Social Media venues.
Customization of charts and semantic understanding would be brilliant, if added. Guess no tool is able to do that currently

We are working on building a tool with mobile accessibility focused on connecting remote entrepreneurs. Although, I believe the key challenge is the same whether from mobile, browser or desktop. The greatest challenge is simplifying the user interface, so usability.

@Heidi Yes, a smartphone-accessible social media analytics tool will be useful, but few clients actually use the dashboard regularly. Most reply on agencies to track, highlight and respond to conversations.
