The Importance of Saying No

At his 20:20 Social blog, Sunil continues his series on the mistakes professional services firm make, and talks about the mistake of wanting to be all things to all people, and, therefore, always saying "yes" to prospects.
That's one mistake we are trying very hard to avoid at 20:20 Social. We have decided not to be a digital agency, so we don’t do any creatives, or any coding, or any campaigns. We have also decided not to be a digital PR agency, so we are helping 20:20 Media build the capabilities to offer services like social media press release, influencer outreach and conversation tracking. We are only focusing on social business strategy, on working with CMOs to use social technologies to build strategic long-term community-based and relationship-based marketing programs. The upside is that we can build the team and the intellectual property to become a truly world-class social business strategy firm. The downside is that we are investing for the future, instead of making quick money. So far, we have been really lucky to find clients who share our strategic approach to social media and business strategy, and I'm hoping that our luck will continue. My gut tells me that it will, because we are making our own luck (and building our own industry).
