Twitterville Pitch: Indian Businesses Using Twitter

Shel Israel, who wrote the brilliant Naked Conversations with Robert Scoble, is now writing a business book on Twitter – Twitterville – and I’m hoping to convince him to write a chapter on Twitter use in emerging economies like India and China.

We have seen in recent past that Twitter has been effective in both China and India for crisis reporting — first in the China earthquake and then in the Mumbai terror attack.

The question is: are businesses in India and China using Twitter in an interesting way?

In part 1 of my 2-part pitch, I’ll track business use of Twitter India. In part 2, I’ll tackle China.

So, here’s a work-in-progress list of Indian businesses using TwitterIndia –

Rajesh/ Dina/ Kiruba/ Rajiv/ Harshil/ Sampad/ Nimesh/ Saurabh/ Chhavi/ Priya/ Manu:  Which other Indian businesses are using Twitter in an interesting way? Do leave a reply in the comments below so that I can add to the list, or write a post of your own and tag Shel Israel.

Here are two other lists that were pointed out to me: list of Asian brands using Twitter by Shalabh Pandey and list of Indian brands on Twitter by Karthik S.

Here’s a list of Indian CEOs and founders on Twitter via Kiruba Shankar.

  • @Balaji:Thank you for pointing me to the Maruti A Star Twitter account.

@Shel: Thank you for your interest. I'll be putting together more on this soon.

@Shalabh: Thank you for pointing me to you list of Asian brands using Twitter.

@Twilight Fairy: Thank you for the help. I think I need to break up the list into three parts: 1. media organizations using Twitters 2. national/ international brands using Twitter and 3. small organizations using Twitter.

    @Rajesh: Valid point. Done.
  • Gaurav: a bit of a positioning issue/ suggestion. "Developing Countries" sure, but the world's interest in us is because we are "Emergent Economies" - change maybe? leave it to you.

    Great list.

    Cheers

    Rajesh
  • err.. I wd prefer to be linked as "Twilight Fairy" :P :)

BTW Smart photography is a very popular magazine on photography! (mentioning since you didnt link it)

And though I havent used Ayojak, Filmbooth - they both seem to be full fledged businesses.
  • Cool! It would be great if you could give suggestions on each. Like what each of us need to do, to improve quality of our tweets
  • Gaurav!!!! u forgot me!!!! no fair. But the magnanimous soul that I am, I will still share some of the brands I know :P :) (I dug them out from my followers list)

    Hi Gaurav,
Good initiative. I myself did some research, and found some interesting examples out of Asia here:

  • We @ Pictualize (http://www.pictualize.com) are also using Twitter heavily to interact and get to know people better.
We are using DMs as the primary means of interacting with people on a one on one basis, while we use the regular Twitter stream to announce new Blog Posts and updates about Pictualize.
Twitter significantly assists in better communication with individuals, far better and simpler compared to email.

    Thanks and regards,

  • This is a great idea. You get me the content, and I'll add it to content I gather on my own. I'll write the chapter and credit you as my collaborator.
  • Maruti Suzuki attempted to create a twitter account for the launch of their new A-Star but they approached it totally the wrong way - started following all and sundry, which must have resulted in a lot of people "blocking" the account [1]. It's now suspended but this was the URL - http://twitter.com/mar_suz_astar
