Hamas’s own public-relations effort has been rather unsuccessful.

You couldn't be further from the truth. Hamas hardly needs to do any PR on its own. It is Israel that needs to garner support. By default, Palestine already has the sympathy of the most of the arab world and muslims elsewhere.

Help Us win (www.helpuswin.wordpress.com) was the brain child of a few folks here in israel who are very involved in the social media space. The idea behind it was that Israel lacks an online presence to explain their side of the story in the PR battle online.
Whether or not we "win" the war against Hamas it is important to share with the outside world why we are defending our borders and how Israel tries to be as humane as possible when waging a war against an enemy surrounded by civilians.
On the flip side due to the lack of electricity and blockage of the mobile systems in Gaza we are unable to hear Gaza's day to day experience of the war against Hamas and it is a shame. In order to really utilize Social Media we need both sides of the conversation to be present and will have to wait until the war with Hamas is over and electricity and the mobile infrastructure is up and running again.

I thought this was a great post - really well researched and points us to some really great information. Thank you for that.
I only want to point out that when Israel is bombarding Palestinians with "menancing" leaflets and phone calls, those communication attempts are one way that Israel is trying to minimize civilian casualties. By warning people to leave areas that are going to be bombed, the IDF is trying to save innocent Palestinian lives. It is a far cry from the psychological war fare and threats that Hamas says it is sending to Israels.

@Gaurav Goodness it is a small world! What class are you teaching at CCT?

State actually has several people working on social media and public diplomacy with a number of others using it for other purposes (recruiting is a big area and we have a strong internal social networking program, from internal blogs to an internal wiki called Diplopedia).
