About The Book
‘The Marketer Who Went Off Consumption’ is my year-long blog-as-a-book experiment in why we choose to consume, or not.
Here is the equivalent of the back page book blurb –
Why would a twenty-something, single, eligible, IIM-educated, upwardly mobile marketer on the corporate fast-track in India’s business capital decide to go ‘off consumption’ for a year?
Will a year off consumption, not buying anything that isn’t a necessity, leave him ill-equipped to handle life and work in Mumbai?
Or, will it leave him with invaluable insights into what drives us to consume, or not, into the nature of consumption, into human nature itself?
To find out, read ‘The Marketer Who Went Off Consumption’, India’s first marketing book-as-a-blog.
If you are already saying ‘wow!’, you should subscribe to the book in a feed reader, or by e-mail so that you don’t miss any chapters.
Otherwise, read on and you will say ‘wow!’ in a minute or two.

Why Go Off Consumption?
I have gone off consumption, not because of the absence of money or an overdose of ideology, but because I’m tired of buying things.
However, my quest (as an individual) to find the formula to turn consumerism-caused ennui into happiness, is also my quest (as a marketer) to learn how to apply that formula to convert our collective ennui from consumption into a yelp of enthusiasm for consuming even more. Therefore, at its core, my experiment is first-hand consumer research, an inquiry into why we choose to consume, or not.
By the way, I’m also looking out for a publisher with a multi-million dollar advance. Think about it — it’s the most brilliant idea ever — I plan to make money by writing a book about not spending money. Of course, the trick is that, for this to work, you first need to have more money than you can sanely spend.
What Is a Necessity?
I have deliberately avoided defining what is a necessity because one of the most interesting aspects of the experiment for me is to “discover” what I think of as a necessity and how it changes with context.
However, here are the ten rules — the ten commandments, if you must — I’ll use through my year of being off consumption.
Three Reasons Why You Should Read the Book
Here are three reasons why you should subscribe to the book today itself –
- The book is a unique look at why we consume, or not, both from the perspective of an over-burdened consumer and an over-eager marketer. Therefore, it’s the only experiment of its kind in India and perhaps the entire world.
- If you are a marketer, you’ll love the insights I’ll share with you over the year, captured in the form of really cool graphs and supported by real-life case studies on how marketers can use these insights.
- Even otherwise, you’ll find enough to enjoy here, from funny posts about zero dollar dating, food cravings and couchsurfing to posts that are straight out of a reality show.
In Fact, You Should Subscribe To the Book
When the book is published in hard cover, you’ll have to pay a few hundred rupees to read it.
However, you can read the book online, absolutely free, months before others read it in print.
