I Entered My Off-Consumption Blog In The Oxford Bookstore e-Author Contest

I entered ‘The Marketer Who Went Off Consumption’ in the Oxford Bookstore e-Author Contest today.

After this post, they’ll either love my audacity, or laugh at it. As for myself, I’m only amazed at it.

Hi,

‘The Marketer Who Went Off Consumption’ is my year-long blog-as-a-book experiment in why we choose to consume, or not.

Here’s the blog equivalent of a back-cover book blurb:-

Why would a twenty-something, single, eligible, upwardly mobile, IIM-educated marketer on the corporate fast-track in India’s business capital decide to go ‘off consumption’ for a year?

Will a year off consumption (no eating out, no going out for movies or music or plays, no television or newspapers, no shopping except for necessities) leave him ill-equipped to handle life and work in Mumbai?

Or, will it leave him with invaluable insights into what drives us to consume, or not, into the nature of consumption, into human nature itself?

‘The Marketer Who Went Off Consumption’ is a blog in which I document my year off consumption. It is also a book-in-progress, in search of a publisher with a multi-million dollar advance.

Here are the first two posts (chapters, if you must) in the blog-as-a-book:-

- In case you are wondering, I’m not broke, just the opposite

There’s also a book cover (attached with the mail) if that’s the sort of thing that catches your eye.

I know my entry doesn’t fit into your format or time frame, but I’m sending it to you in the hope that you’ll find it compelling enough to return to the blog/ book and maybe even offer to publish it.

In any case, I’m going to write the book anyways, and publish it anyways, multi-million dollar advance or not, so wish me luck.

What I find a little ironic is that you are hoping and pegging for a multi-million dollar deal in exchange for giving up consumption. It's almost like, you are waiting for the big pay-day by giving up the tiny ones... You want to be rewarded with the loudest form of intangible consumption (money, fame etc) in exchange for giving up material consumption. It's interesting...

Not to be critical, but your stand seems a tad bit flawed. :) Nonetheless, that's brave and I look forward to following your story.

@Jinal: But I won't get a book deal because I have given up consumption.

I'll get a book deal because, through my first hand experience, I'll get (and share) insights on why people choose to consume, or not.

Here's a small sample of what I hope to do.

As you follow my story, do wish me luck; I'll need a lot of luck to pull this off. :-)

I understand. But psychologically, there is still a reward associated with this sacrifice that propels you further, consciously or sub-consciously. Anyways! You have all my luck and I am sure you are going to pull this off. Keep us updated!!

@Jinal: Here's how I look at it: the marketing insights part will be central to the book but appeal only to a small set of people, while the daily drama of being off-consumption will bring in people who won't read a marketing book otherwise.
