The Number One Question I Am Asking Myself Ever Since I Have Gone Off Consumption

Welcome to The Marketer Who Went Off Consumption! Subscribe to my RSS feed in a feed reader or by e-mail and you'll never miss any chapters from my year-long blog-as-a-book experiment on why we choose to consume, or not.

The number one question everyone is asking me ever since I have gone off consumption is different from the number one question I have been asking myself.

While everyone else is consumed with the scientific curiosity of how will I decide what’s a necessity, I’m worried about the more immediate issue of what to do on my next date.

Consumption is a social thing and, of all our social interactions, dating is the one most tied up with buying things.

Let’s do a quick visualization exercise to establish this. Please don’t read beyond the next paragraph until you have completed this exercise.

I want you to close your eyes, breathe deeply, and think of a perfect first date for two minutes. Think of the best first date you have ever had. Or, think of how you want your next date to turn out. Or, if you are married, or off dating, think of your favorite first date sequence from a movie or an ad.

Your time starts now.

I’m reasonably sure that your perfect first date sequence included at least some of these images –

- Man in black dinner jacket picks up woman in red evening gown from her house.
- Man offers woman a bunch of orchids and ushers her into his fancy chauffeur-driven sedan.
- Man and woman drink red wine over a candlelit dinner in an exclusive restaurant.
- Man walks woman back to her doorstep; man and woman kiss on the doorstep.
- Cut to six months later: man goes down on his knees and gives woman a huge diamond ring.

It’s interesting how the idea of dating consistently conjures up images, across cultures, of man wooing woman by buying her (expensive) things.

So, ever since I have gone off consumption, the question one question I’ve been asking myself is: how do you woo a woman if you can’t buy her things, or, what do you do on a first date if you are off consumption?

It figures that that would be the *first* question *you’d* ask!!

Finally understand what you meant by going “off consumption”, and yes is rather cool, I like! Also, the whole look of the blog is nice, can just imagine you obsessing over it till it was just perfect for you (knowing you, you’re still obsessing over it)

Knowing you, I’m sure you’ll figure out lots of things to do on the date, so won’t volunteer any suggestions.

Would mention though that the url mentioned in your header doesn’t seem to work ( http://www.offconsumption.com ) ?

  2. @Melody: I’m glad you like the blog and, you guessed right, I’m totally obsessing over it. :-)

Yes, I know that the offconsumption.com domain isn’t working; the name servers propagation should resolve itself today.
